Biographical History

Class of 1891, Professor of Mathematics at Cornell. After graduating, John Tanner served as an instructor in mathematics at Cornell and studied at Göttingen from 1894-1896. He was a member of Delta Upsilon. Also in 1894, he was appointed as assistant professor at Cornell. He received his Ph.D. from the University of New Hampshire in 1901. In 1904, he became a full professor, a position he held until his retirement in 1926. He served as secretary of the faculty of College of Arts and Sciences from 1897-1903 and was a life member of the American Mathematical Society, a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a member of the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education, and of Sigma Xi. He authored several textbooks on algebra and analytical geometry.
