Biographical History

Dr. Tinsley R. Harrison was born in Talladega, Alabama, on March 18, 1900, the son of Groce and Louisa Bondurant Harrison. He attended Marion Military Institute until 1916 and the University of Michigan where he received his B.A. He received his M.D. from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. During this period, Harrison married Elizabeth Woodward with whom he had four children. Harrison accepted a position with Vanderbilt University and remained there until 1941 when he went to North Carolina to head the Department of Internal Medicine at Bowman Gray School of Medicine. He accepted the chair of the the Department of Medicine at Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas in 1944. In 1950, Harrison accepted the acting deanship of the Medical College of Alabama in Birmingham, Alabama and the chairmanship of the Department of Medicine. Relinquising the acting deanship in 1951, Harrison remained chair until 1957. He remained an active faculty member until his retirement in 1970. Harrison.

Dr. Tinsley R. Harrison was born the son of Dr. William Groce and Louisa Bondurant Harrison in April 1900. He attended public schools, the Marion Military Academy, and the University of Michigan. He earned his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University. Harrison later served as an instructor and professor at Vanderbilt University and Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University. He also organized the Department of Medicine at Bowman Gray and the Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas, before returning to Alabama as acting dean of the Medical College of Alabama and chair of the Department of Medicine in 1950. Prior to 1950, Harrison had earned a national reputation for cardiovascular research and had begun editing the textbook, Principles of Internal Medicine. At Alabama, Harrison remained acting dean until 1951 and chair of the Department of Medicine until 1957. He remained an active faculty member until 1970 when he retired. At that time, he accepted a position as distinguished physician of the Veterans Administration. He continued to teach and write until his death in the summer of 1978.

In 1950, he accepted the acting deanship of the Medical College of Alabama and the chairmanship of the Department of Medicine. Relinquishing the acting deanship in 1951, he remained chair until 1957. Harrison continued on the Medical College faculty until 1970 when he retired. He continued writing and researching until his death in 1978.
