W.J. Usery (1923- ) was born in Hardwick, Georgia. He was a machinist, union official, Assistant Secretary and Secretary of Labor, Director of Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service and federal and private mediator.

W.J. Usery, Jr. (1923- ), machinist, union official, Assistant Secretary and Secretary of Labor, federal and private mediator, born in Hardwick, Georgia.

Usery's grandfather's blacksmith shop afforded training in metal work and shop functioning, plus incidental observation of his elder's disciplinary style. Usery's attendence at the National Youth Administration's program is highlighted. Hardwick's social system with its treatment of African-Americans and Jews is discussed, plus the differences between Democrats and Republicans. Local politics are discussed at length, with an emphasis on the sheriff's post as the most important office, plus the theme of lack of job protection for state employees. Southern stagnation and the South's labor problems are also discussed.

W.J. Usery (1923- ), machinist, union official, Assistant Secretary and Secretary of Labor, federal and private mediator, born in Hardwick, Georgia.

W.J. Usery joined the International Association of Machinists (IAM), Local 918, then Local 8 as a founding member in Macon, Georgia during 1952. From 1954-1956, he served as IAM's special representative at Cape Canaveral and from 1956-1969, he served as IAM Grand Lodge Representative.

Usery was appointed by President Nixon as Assistant Secretary of Labor for Labor-Management relations from 1969 until 1973 when he was appointed as Director, Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. President Ford then appointed Usery Secretary of Labor, a post he held until 1977.
