Crossgate Homes, Incorporated.

The Central of Georgia Railway, formed from its predecessor, The Central Railroad and Banking Company of Georgia in 1895 was a dominant force in the economic life of Georgia and parts of Alabama through the mid-twentieth century. Through its many branch and subsidiary lines, land holding companies, and agricultural experimentation, it controlled much of the region's transportation and was a strong influence in the rural development of the area.

(Cont.) Crossgate Homes, Incorporated was chartered in Chatham County, Georgia in 1942 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Port Wentworth Corporation. The chief objective of the company was to supply housing for the employees of McEvoy Shipbuilding Corporation. The company bought and leased real estate; constructed, leased and sold buildings, homes, and other improvements; and operated ommunity houses and parks in its subdivisions. The subdivisions developed by Crossgate included Crossgate and Bonnybridge.

(Cont.) In 1950, the capital stock of Port Wentworth Corporation, including that of Crossgate Homes was sold to Empire Land Company, a subsidiary of the Central of Georgia Railway. Crossgate Homes, Incorporated was liquidated in 1964.
