Biographical History

Albert A. Anderson, Jr. (1938- ), emeritus professor of Art Education at The Pennsylvania State University, received his Ph.D. from Ohio State University in art education. Dr. Anderson received the bachelor of science (1961), and master of science (1964) in art education from the State University of New York. He served as coordinator of art in the Poughkeepsie, N.Y., School District from 1961 until 1965 and was a teaching associate at Ohio State from 1965 until 1967 where he was involved with materials from the Central Midwestern Regional Educational Lab (CEMREL) Aesthetic Education Program. From 1967 until 1969, he was assistant professor of art at the State University of New York, College at New Paltz, before joining the Frostburg faculty from 1969 until 1972. He was hired in October 1972 as an instructor of art education at the Pennsylvania State University. Anderson served as the head of the art education program there from 1987 to 1989 and established the bachelor of fine arts program in metals in the School of Visual Arts. He was one of the principal designers of the innovative undergraduate professional course sequence in art education known as the Professional Block. Anderson also served on the planning committees of three Penn State international conferences on the history of art education in 1985, 1989, and 1995. At his retirement in 1999, he was an elected member of the University Faculty Senate. Anderson is a distinguished fellow and former president of the Pennsylvania Art Education Association. Professional interests include the history of art education, particularly as it relates to the history of the craft arts in education, art and craft criticism, the history of art education in Pennsylvania, art instruction before 1870, art censorship issues, and the teaching and administration of public school art programs. Dr. Anderson has served as a metals artist-in-residence, art instructor, administrator, consultant, director, and journal editor for a number of internationally known craft education organizations, including the Peters Valley Craftsmen, Appalachian Center for Crafts, the Arrowmont School of Crafts, and the Artist-Blacksmiths' Association of North America. He has taught in and administered art programs, and has served as a consultant to public schools, universities, and professional art organizations.
