Biographical History
Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from the Fifth Congressional District in Chicago, Ill. from 1975-1983.
Born and educated in Chicago. Began in politics running as an independent Democrat against the chosen Democratic candidate. Lost but had a strong showing and consequently received party backing. Elected to serve in the Illinois General Assembly from 1955 to 1975. In 1975 he was chosen by Mayor Daley to run for the U.S. Representative seat left vacant by the death of John Kluzynski and won. While in Congress he served on the Full Committee on Public Works and Transportation, the House Aviation subcommittee, the Water Resources subcommitte, the Investigations and Oversight subcommittee, and the Small Business Committee. He was the chairman of the Public Buildings & Grounds subcommittee. During his tenure he worked for the revitalization of Midway Airport. He was married to Lillian Makowski in 1934 and they had two children, James and Marian, and several grandchildren. He died in 1984.
