Biographical History

Charles Sumner Ward (1858-1929), fund raising pioneer.

He began his career in the 1880's working for the YMCA as a General Secretary. While in this position, he developed the short-term, intensive fund raising campaign--the "Ward Plan." Ward directed YMCA campaigns in London, New York and other cities in the 1900's and 1910's, and he directed the national campaings for the American Red Cross and United War Works during World War I (1917-1919). In 1920, he founded the fund raising firm in New York City that would later be known as Ward, Dreshman and Reinhardt.
