Biographical History
Papers of Baron Frederick Augustus De Zeng (1756-1838), his children, and related families of Geneva, N.Y. Baron De Zeng, originally from Dresden, served as a Hessian officer in the Revolutionary War. After settling in Geneva, he became a glass manufacturer and canal executive. His son, William Steuben De Zeng (1793-1844), was a co-owner with Joseph Fellows of a cotton factory in Geneva, helped found Geneva (now Hobart) College, and was involved in the construction of the Cayuga and Seneca Canal. The collection also contains the papers of the children of the Baron and his wife, Mary Lawrence, in particular their son William Steuben De Zeng, as well as his wife, Caroline Cutbush Rees, her parents, Major James Rees and Elizabeth Reynolds Rees, and her aunt and uncle, Anne Reynolds and Dr. Edward Cutbush. Also represented in the collection are the Betterton, De Lancey, Endicott, Lawrence, Oehlschlagel and Seward families.
