Nicolai Berezowsky was born in St. Petersburg, Russia on May 17, 1900. He studied piano, violin, and voice at the Imperial Chapel in St. Petersburg where he graduated in 1916. He was a violinist in the orchestras of the Saratov Opera (1917-1919) and the Bolshoi (1919-1920). He emigrated to New York in 1922 (becoming an American citizen in 1928), and played in the orchestra of the Capitol Theatre. From 1923-1929 he was a member of the New York Philharmonic. During this time he studied at the Juilliard School of Music violin with Paul Kochanski and composition with Rubin Goldmark. From 1935-1940 he was a member of the Coolidge String Quartet, and was an assistant conductor at CBS in 1932-1936 and again in 1941-1946. He received a grant from the National Institute of Arts and Letters (1944) and a Guggenheim Fellowship (1948). Berezowsky died in New York on August 27, 1953.
