Biographical History

Brock Fahrni came to the University of British Columbia in 1952 as a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Medicine. He became the founding Director of UBC's School of Rehabilitation Medicine in 1961 and served in this capacity until his retirement in 1978. He was renowned for his radical approach to geriatrics and spent much of his life challenging traditional myths about the aging process. His contributions to the field began in the 1940s when he began working with aging war veterans and advocated social planning for them. Fahrni opposed the notion that aging was a disease and worked to keep elderly people in the general community with the assistance of support programs.
