Biographical History
At the core of the collection is poet and philanthropist Aline Badger Carter who was Poet Laureate of Texas from 1947-1949 and who documented San Antonio history in her 1,000 page manuscript, "Light Beyond the Hills." Mrs. Carter kept family papers dating back to her great grandmother, Elizabeth Mary Minefee, who migrated to the Republic of Texas in the 1840s. Mrs. Carter's grandmother, Sarah Riddle Eagar (1842-1947), was a friend of Clara Driscoll and custodian of the Alamo in the early part of the 20th century. Sarah Eagar had three daughters, Fannie, Blanche (mother of Aline Carter) and Florence, who all eventually married and settled in Texas. In 1915 Aline B. Carter married Judge Henry Champe Carter, a prominent San Antonio attorney and judge. She was a deeply religious woman and actively encouraged the spiritual lives of many young men, aspiring seminarians and convicts alike. Aline Carter raised three sons: Frank, David and Champe.
