American soldier.
Soldier and commander of the 1st New York Regiment, 1776-1783, best known for his April, 1779, expedition against the Onondaga.
With 558 men, Van Schaick left Fort Schuyler (formerly Fort Stanwix) and marched to the Onondaga country. Suffering no casualties, his forces killed twelve Onondaga warriors and took thirty-four prisoners, burned the Indian settlements, killed livestock, and confiscated and destroyed firearms. They returned to Fort Schuyler on April 24, five and a half days after their departure.
