Biographical History

Composed 1938. First performance at the Fifth Yaddo Music Period, by the Yaddo Chamber Orchestra, Sept. 10, 1938, Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Arthur Shepherd conducting--Cf. Fleisher Collection.

Etler was born Feb. 19, 1912 in Battle Creek, Iowa. He studied at the University of Illinois and the Cleveland Institute of Music with Arthur Shepherd and Paul Hindemith. He was oboist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (1938-1940), instructor of wind instructments at Yale University (1942-1946), at Cornell University (1946-1947) and at the University of Illinois (1947-1949). He was professor of composition at Smith College (1949-1973). He died June 13, 1973.
