Composed 1938. First performance at the Fifth Yaddo Music Period, by the Yaddo Chamber Orchestra, Sept. 10, 1938, Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Arthur Shepherd conducting--Cf. Fleisher Collection.
Etler was born Feb. 19, 1912 in Battle Creek, Iowa. He studied at the University of Illinois and the Cleveland Institute of Music with Arthur Shepherd and Paul Hindemith. He was oboist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (1938-1940), instructor of wind instructments at Yale University (1942-1946), at Cornell University (1946-1947) and at the University of Illinois (1947-1949). He was professor of composition at Smith College (1949-1973). He died June 13, 1973.
Commissioned by the Cleveland Orchestra for its Fortieth Anniversary Season. Composed 1957. First performance Cleveland, Ohio, 12 October 1957, The Cleveland Orchestra, George Szell conductor. Dedicated to George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra.--Cf. Fleisher Collection.
