James Hogg (c.1770-1835) earnt his living as a shepherd or sheep-farmer for most of his life but also wrote prolifically, producing poems, novels, articles and compiling collections of Scottish folk songs. He was known as the Ettrick shepherd as he was born and raised in the Ettrick valley in Selkirkshire.
1835-1847 Member of Parliament for Beverley; 1847-1857 Member of Parliament for Honiton; 1839-1858 Director of the East India Company; 1846-1847 and 1852-1853 Chairman of the East India Company.
