Biographical History
The Motion Picture Industry Promotion Commission was established in 1970 (1970 NM Laws, Chp. 11, Sec. 1-2). The Commission was abolished and its duties were transferred to the Dept. of Development's Board of Economic Development in 1976 (1976 NM Laws, Chp. 26, Sec. 1-2). In 1977 the Dept. of Development was abolished and the Board was transferred to the newly created Commerce and Industry Dept.'s Motion Picture Bureau within the Economic Development Division. The Commerce and Industry Dept. was abolished in 1983 and the Bureau's duties were transferred to the newly created Economic Development and Tourism Dept.'s Film Division (1983 NM Laws, Chp. 297, Sec. 4). The Division was also known as the New Mexico Film Commission. In 1991 the Economic Development and Tourism Dept. was abolished and the Commission was transferred to the newly created Economic Development Dept. (1991 NM Laws, Chp. 21, Sec. 12). Later in the 1990s the Comission changed its name to the New Mexico Film Office. The Office's function is to promote and support the motion picture industry in New Mexico.
