Biographical History

Egon Sharpe Pearson (1895-1980), statistician, was born at Hampstead, London, on 11 August 1895, son of the biometrician Karl Pearson. He attended Dragon School, Oxford, and Winchester College before entering Trinity College, Cambridge (B.A., 1920; M.A., 1924), where he studied mathematics. Pearson became a statistics lecturer in his father's department at University College London, and was appointed head of the statistics department, 1933, and professor, 1935. During the Second World War, he was seconded to the Ordnance Board. He was closely connected with the journal Biometrika, and was its editor for many years. Pearson retired from his London chair in 1960, and died at West Lavington, near Midhurst, Sussex, on 12 June 1980.
