American newspaper editor.
Newspaper editor and assistant secretary of war.
Charles Anderson Dana was a newspaper editor and author. Born into an impoverished family in New Hampshire, Dana managed one year at Harvard University before financial concerns forced him to leave. He joined Brook Farm as a farmer and teacher, where he developed an interest in Fourierism, a form of French socialism. He accepted a job with the New York Tribune, and his letters from Europe helped his reputation, but he left the paper over a dispute based on his anti-slavery stance. Dana was hired as an investigator by the War Department, and became an assistant to the Secretary of War. Dana was perhaps best known as editor and part owner of the New York Sun, which he instilled with a reputation for urbane writing and quality reporting. Outspoken, intelligent, and incisive, Dana also wrote several books and compiled a number of important anthologies.
