Biographical History
It is unclear when and where Randolph first trained and practiced cabinetmaking, but in 1767 he advertised his new shop in Chestnut Street, Philadelphia. He also employed around this time cabinetmakers John Pollard and Hercules Courtenay. His clientele included wealthy figures such as John Cadwalader and Vincent Emerson Lockerman (several pieces probably owned by Lockerman are included). Randolph retired in 1778.
Benjamin Randolph was one of the foremost cabinetmakers, gilders, and carvers in colonial America. Born in Monmouth County, N.J., he moved to Philadelphia, Pa. before beginning his career. He was noted as a joiner in early transactions; however, he sold all sorts of cabinet and chair work at his shop, Golden Eagle, on Chestnut St. in Philadelphia. Thomas Jefferson commissioned Randolph's work, and the table upon which the Declaration of Independence was drafted has been attributed to him. Randolph retired in 1782 and moved to Burlington County, N.J., where he held an interest in Speed Mills. He was twice married; first to Anna Bromwich and then to Mary Wilkinson. He died in 1790.
