Biographical History

James Cropper (1773-1840), philanthropist, was born at Winstanley, Lancashire. Following an apprenticeship with the merchants Rathbone Brothers, Liverpool, he founded his own mercantile house, Cropper, Benson & Co. He became director of the new Liverpool and Manchester Railway in 1830, and maintained an interest in the company's affairs until his death. Cropper was involved in philanthropic work, supporting the anti-slavery movement and pressing for the relief of the Irish poor. He also established a school and orphanage on his estate at Fearnhead, near Warrington. He died on 26 February 1840.
