Biographical History

Harrison was a lawyer, publisher of the Chicago Times, and mayor of Chicago (1897-1905, 1911-1915).

Five-term Democratic mayor of Chicago, 1897-1905, 1911-1915.

The son of Carter Henry Harrison III, also a five-term Chicago mayor, Carter IV trained as a lawyer and operated the family-owned Chicago Times, 1891-1894. As mayor, he is known for his victorious fight with traction magnate Charles T. Yerkes, and for suppressing gambling and prostitution. Harrison served in France as a Red Cross captain during World War I; travelled extensively during the 20's; and served as Collector of Internal Revenue, 1933-1944. A patron of the arts, he donated his own substantial collection to the Art Institute of Chicago.
