Biographical History
The War Resisters League (WRL) was established in 1923 through the initiative of Jessie Wallace Hughan. It began as an organization for men and women willing to sign a pledge refusing to support war of any kind. During World War II, it lent both moral and legal support to conscientious objectors, especially absolute pacifists who refused to participate even in civilian alternative service, often for reasons other than religious beliefs. In 1968, the WRL merged with the Committee for Nonviolent Action. It continues to urge civil disobedience and nonviolence as methods for promoting disarmament, resistance to the draft, and a nuclear free world.
