Biographical History

Lee Cochran worked for Iowa's Extension Division while in high school, assisting schools and organizations in the Midwest with 16 mm films and glass slides. In 1923 he began working for Visual Services at the University of Iowa. Cochran served in the Navy during World War II and worked with the Training Aids Division of the Bureau of Naval Personnel. After the war Cochran established the Audiovisual Center in the Extension Division at the University of Iowa; taught audiovisual courses in the University's College of Education; organized the Audiovisual Education Association of Iowa (AVEAI); served as president of the National Education Association's Dept. of Audiovisual Instruction (DAVI); and organized the Educational Media Leadership Conferences at Lake Okoboji, Iowa beginning in 1955. Cochran was the son of Robert S. Cochran, secretary of the Iowa City Shipping Association. His first wife was Greta Cochran. In 1960 he married Lida Weed Myers who had been teaching photography and working in audiovisual services at the University of Washington when the couple met. Lida Cochran was hired as an instructor in the University of Iowa's College of Education.
