Biographical History

Born in Pittsford, Otsego County, New York; son of Joseph and Anna Frary Hanks. The family moved to Pawlet, Vermont in 1801. After studying music, Hanks enlisted in the 11th Regiment, U.S. Infantry, in 1813, to serve the duration of the war. He was 13 years of age. He served at Sackett's Harbor, the Battle of Chrysler's Field, and on the Niagara Frontier at Buffalo, Chippewa, Fort George, and Lundy's Lane. He was honorably discharged on 23 May 1815. After the war, he married Charlotte Garber of Charleston, Virginia, and studied painting in Philadelphia. He devoted himself to painting and for many years, to masonic activities, in New York City and Ohio. He died on 27 June 1853.

From the description of Jarvis Frary Hanks biographical memoir and family notes, 1831, 1874. (Buffalo History Museum). WorldCat record id: 70794219
