Margaret Wylie Martin (née Thomas) first matriculated at the University in 1922 and graduated with an MB with honours in 1927 and and an MD in 1931.
Martin was born in Glasgow on 4 July 1903, the daughter of a drapery warehouseman called William. She was an outstanding student and appears frequently in the prize lists. During her degree she achieved 11 first class certificates, for classes such as Psychological Medicine and Diseases of Children, won 2nd prize in two classes, 1st prize in two classes and she also won three medals: two for Clinical Surgery and one for Practice of Medicine. She graduated MB with honours on the 17th October 1927.
She stayed on at the University to study for an MD in childbirth fever, which she passed in 1931 with a highly commended thesis titled, The Intensive Treatment of Puerperal Sepsis .
After her studies, Martin worked at Belvidere and Mearnskirk hospitals in Glasgow as a child and maternity welfare officer. She married Russell Dickson Martin (1901-1998), a medical officer in Clydebank, Inverness and Edinburgh, in 1936 and they had three children together. She died in 2002.
