Anthony Clement McAuliffe (b. July 2, 1898, Washington, D.C.-d. Aug. 11, 1975), U.S. Army officer, was commissioned in the field artillery from West Point in 1919. During World War II, he served as commanding general, 101st Airborne Division Artillery; assistant division commander, 101st Airborne Division; and commanding general, 103rd Division and 79th Division. During the Battle of the Bulge (December 1944), he replied to a German demand for surrender with the message “Nuts,” and rallied his troops until relieved by part of Patton's 3rd Army. Assignments after the War included chief, Chemical Corps; commanding general, 7th Army; and commanding general, U.S. Army Europe. He retired in 1956.
