Judge Granville Berkley, Sr. came to Boulder in 1863 with his son, Granville Berkley, Jr. He was a pioneer lawyer in Boulder. He had served in the Iowa Volunteers during the Civil War, and Granville, Jr. served under him. Judge Berkley was married three times and had eleven children.
Junius Berkley, another son of Granville, Sr., was a leading lawyer in Boulder and one of the first regents of the University of Colorado.
Granville Berkley, Jr. married Clara C. White of Hygiene, Colo., in 1869 and they had six children: Mary Ellen, Frank, Everett, Lura, Sylvia, and Lillian. They settled in Boulder, where he started the first ice business in town. The original ice house was at 2108 Walnut. Granville, Jr. was a member of Colorado Company H and participated in the Sand Creek massacre.
