Educator and author born Oct. 15, 1830 and died March 6, 1905. He married Martha Neilson in 1867 who survived him. He graduated from Union College in 1852, and taught at Albany Academy, 1855-1863, and Rutgers College, 1863-1873. He served as Superintendent of Educational Affairs in Japan, 1873-1879, and Secretary of the Board of Regents for the University of the State of New York, 1880-1889.
