John Clifford Hodges Lee (1887-1958) was born in Junction City, Kansas. He received his commission in the Corps of Engineers from West Point in 1909 and later served as aide to Major General in Leonard Wood in 1917 and 1918. He was commander of the Fort Mason, California Port of Embarkation in 1940 and 1941, then commanded the 2nd Infantry Division from November 1941 to May 1942. He reached the rank of major general in February 1942, serving as chief of the Services of Supply in the European Theater of Operations from 1942 to 1945, with additional responsibility as deputy commander of U.S. forces in the Theater of Operations from January 1944. He reached the rank of lieutenant general in February 1944 and served as commander of U.S. forces in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations from December 1945 to September 1947. He retired from Army service in December 1947.
