Biographical History

Leslie Allan Janka (b. 1940) received a B.A. in Economics in 1962 from the University of Redlands, Redlands, California, and an M.A. in International Affairs from Johns Hopkins University in 1964. From 1964 to 1967 he took graduate courses in public administration, management science, and statistics at American University and George Washington University. From 1964 to 1968 he served as a management specialist at the U.S. Information Agency, and from 1968 to 1971 he was Assistant Dean of the School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University. Janka served as a staff assistant on the National Security Council (NSC) from 1971 to 1975, and was a Senior Staff Member for Legislative and Public Affairs at NSC from 1975 to 1976. He was Deputy Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern, African, and South African Affairs at the Department of Defense from 1976 to 1978. From 1978 to 1983, Janka served as a consultant and lecturer specializing in Middle Eastern defense and international economic issues; and he was associated with the government relations firm of Neill and Company, Washington, D.C. He was Special Assistant to the President and Deputy Press Secretary for Foreign Affairs at the White House from September to October 1983.
