Biographical History

Five archaeological expeditions, between 1910 and 1914, to the site of Sardis, located in the west of modern Turkey, which were conducted by Howard Crosby Butler. Butler had planned a long-term effort, but the outbreak of World War I in 1914 interrupted the work of the expedition. Butler died on his way back from Turkey in 1921. His lieutenant, Theodore Leslie Shear, returned in the midst of the Turkish-Greek War in 1922, but had to leave. For further information see: Howard Crosby Butler, Sardis I (Leyden, E. J. Brill, 1922).
