Biographical History

Self-taught American photographer, known also as an instructor (Art Institute of Chicago, Rhode Island School of Design). His work frequently depicts the dichotomies in nature, with light and shadow, and positive and negative space forming as much of the image as solid objects.

Education: Attended public school in Royal Oak, Michigan; studied engineering at Michigan State College, East Lansing, 1931-33; self-taught in photography. Family: Married Eleanor Knapp in 1936; daughter: Barbara. Careeer: Photographer since 1938. Worked for Chrysler Motor Parts Corporation, Detroit, 1934-44; Processing Assistant, General Motors Photographic Laboratories, Detroit, 1944-45. Instructor in Photography, 1946-49, and Head of the Department of Photography, 1949-61, Institute of Design, Illnois Institute of Technology, Chicago; Associate Professor, 1961-64, Professor, 1964-77, and Chairman of the Department of Photography, 1961-73, Rhode Island School of Design, Providence. Visiting Instructor, Black Mountain College, North Carolina, 1951, University of California Extension, Berkeley, 1966, and University of Massachusetts, Boston, 1974.
