He joined the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War and achieved the rank of Brigadier General. Following the War he was appointed Governor of the Northwest Territory. He led the disastrous expedition to the Wabash River in 1791 which resulted in the defeat of the American army at the hands of a confederation of Indians. Arthur St. Clair (1737-1818) was born in Scotland and served in the British Army during the Seven Years' War before settling in Pennsylvania. St. Clair then served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War and was elected to a one-year term as President of the Continental Congress in 1787 before being appointed Governor of the Northwest Territory in 1788.
Arthur St. Clair (23 Mar. 1737-31 Aug. 1818), politician and soldier, was born in Thurso, Caithness, Scotland. He emigrated to America where he received a commission as lieutenant during the French and Indian War and later as a major general in the American Revolution. After the war he held several positions in Pennsylvania state government, then reluctantly accepted congressional appointment as the first governor of the Northwest Territory. Politically and financially bankrupt by 1802, St. Clair returned to his home "The Hermitage," at Chestnut Ridge, Pa., in the Ligonier Valley where he died.
