Arcady Dubensky was a Russian-American violinist and composer.
He was born in Viatka (now Kirov), Russia, on October 15, 1890. In his early years he sang in the choir of Viatka Cathedral. In 1904 he received a scholarship at the Moscow Conservatory, studying violin with Jan Hrimaly and composition with Ilyinsky. Upon graduating he was a violinist at the Moscow Opera from 1910-19. During this time he also learned conducting from the leader of the ballet, Arends. He then left Russia, stopping over in Constantinople (1920) before emigrating to the United States in 1921. He was a member of the New York Symphony Orchestra and in 1931, joined the New York Philharmonic. He resigned the orchestra in 1948 to concentrate on composing, and retired from performing in 1953.
His compositions include chiefly orchestral music, though he completed two operas as well.
Arcady Dubensky died on October 14, 1966, in Tenafly, New Jersey.
