Biographical History
Jonathan Meredith was a Philadelphia tanner and currier.
Jonathan Meredith ( - ), father of lawyer and banker William Meredith (1772-1844) and grandfather of U.S. Treasury Secretary William Morris Meredith (1799-1873), was a tanner and currier in Philadelphia, Pa.
Jonathan Meredith was a tanner from Philadelphia, PA during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He apparently owned a good deal of property including four houses that he rented, a retail store, and his "tan yard." Early 19th century city directories list him as a "gentleman," suggesting that he earned a substantial income from his business and as a landlord.
Jonathan Meredith, the founder of the Meredith family of Philadelphia, was a wealthy tanner, currier and importer. His eldest son, David (b. 1771), lost much of the family fortune in the early 19th century. His younger son, William (1772-1884), became a prominent Philadelphia lawyer and president of the Schuylkill Bank.
