Biographical History

Lida Marie Haynes was born to Yellowstone concessionaire Jack Ellis Haynes and his second wife, Isabel Nauerth Haynes in St. Paul, Minnesota on November 28, 1931. She was the only child of the two and was raised to carry on the family photography business. As a young child, Lida Haynes spent her winters in St. Paul and summered in Yellowstone. She moved with her family to Bozeman, Montana in 1941 because of the city's proximity to Yellowstone National Park. While in High School, Lida Haynes was active in downhill skiing and raced competitively for the Bozeman Ski Club. Lida Haynes also participated in the typical activities of a rich only child. After graduating from High School at Gallatin County High, Lida Haynes attended the University of Colorado in Boulder. During this time, she earned her pilot's license and bought a plane. The Haynes's plans for Lida to inherit the family business tragically ended when the twenty-year-old and three friends were killed in an auto accident on July 23, 1952.

From the guide to the Lida Haynes Papers, 1910-1952, (Montana State University-Bozeman Library, Merrill G Burlingame Special Collections)
