Biographical History
Richard Chandler was a classical scholar and author, best known for his travels in Asia Minor and Greece. Born in Hampshire and educated at Queen's College, Oxford, and Magdalen College, he published several notable translations and works on classical Greece, and was commissioned by the Society of Dilettanti to command an expedition to Asia Minor and Greece. He collected valuable notes and materials, including pieces of the Parthenon, and co-authored several books on the expedition's discoveries. He later held several church preferments, and continued to write about the classical world, including a history of Troy.
