Born in Half Moon, N.Y., Feb. 9, 1798; educated near Albany, N.Y. ; teacher in University of Michigan, 1821-1825; engaged in surveying; drew first published map of Michigan; published twelve different maps of Michigan, Wisconsin, Lake Superior, and Detroit; engraved most of them; filled many important offices in Detroit; published first Gazetteer of Michigan in 1830; died. in Detroit, Mar. 24, 1859.
