Octavius Longworth Pruden, a Civil War veteran, was an assistant secretary to the U.S. presidents for almost thirty years, beginning in 1872 during the Grant administration. James Atkins was a lawyer and U.S. Customs House collector in Savannah, Ga.
Union soldier, executive clerk to Pres. Ulysses S. Grant, and assistant secretary to presidents Hayes, Garfield, Arthur, Cleveland, Harrison, McKinley, and Theodore Roosevelt.
