Born in San Antonio, Texas to prominent surveyor and businessman John James, John H. James received his law degree from Harvard, and returned to San Antonio to practice.

A partner with Isaac P. Simpson in the firm Simpson and James, James was involved in a wide-ranging legal practice until his appointment as Chief Justice of the newly-formed Fourth District Court of Civil Appeals.
