Biographical History
John Brown, a Philadelphia merchant, was born in 1748 in County Tyrone, Ireland, and came to Philadelphia with his father as a young boy. He received his training as a clerk in the house of Robert Morris during the 1760s. During the Revolution, he was Assistant Paymaster-General, Secretary of the Pennsylvania Board of War (1777) and Secretary of the Marine Committee and Board of Admiralty (1779-1781). He made several voyages in ships of the infant U.S. Navy transporting specie for the use of the government. Brown was also one of the founders of the Hibernian Society and of the Academy of Fine Arts. He died on Oct. 31, 1833.
