Biographical History
Louis W. Hill, Jr. was born in St. Paul on May 19, 1902, the son of the president of the Great Northern Railway and the grandson of its founder, James J. Hill. He was educated at the St. Paul Academy, Phillips Exeter Academy, and Yale University. Prior to his election to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1936, he worked for the Great Northern Railway (1927-29) and for the First National Bank of St. Paul (1930-34). He became vice president of the Arthur Iron Mining Company (St. Paul) in 1934, serving in that capacity for the remainder of his career, including the years he served in the legislature. Hill represented the fortieth district continuously until his 1952 defeat. Hill ran again in 1954, but was again defeated.
