Biographical History

The collection comprises correspondence, addressed envelopes, newspaper clippings (some loose and others pasted into two exercise books), the 1912 will of Dr G.B.D. Macdonald, black and white photographs, invitations, telegrams, school diplomas of Norman Macdonald, published Hansard and jottings. The papers mainly relate to Beatrice Macdonald, though there are also letters, written in 1946, by Norman Macdonald in his capacity as industrial co-ordinator with the allied commission for Italian economic recovery. These are to Russell G. Smith of the Bank of America re financing a redevelopment program in Milan, and Mr H.V. Davies, chairman of Roura & Forgas (African & Eastern) Ltd., concerning trading in the Far East. There is also a letter, dated 1/12/38, from Dr L.A. Pilotti of Berlin to N. Macdonald. It mentions European sanctions and negotiations, as well as the "Jewish problem". The correspondence of Beatrice Macdonald, covering the period 1936-1941, is to Lilian C. Barker, on whom she wrote a newspaper article, George and Norman Macdonald, the Hon. James McGirr and Professor Osborne (state censor for N.S.W.). The newspaper clippings are mainly articles written by Beatrice Macdonald on prominent and titled British women.

Two exercise books are devoted to clippings about fundraising activities of the Kindergarten Union of N.S.W. and film censorship. There are also other incidentals in the collection: jottings on medical matters, genealogical research with a family tree (listing Lady MacDonald of the Isles) and a circular on 'Film star quests', a fundraising idea with successful entrants being interviewed by F.W. Thring. The photos include many portraits of Beatrice Macdonald and snapshots of family, houses and holidays. There are also some photos of kindergarten aged children. Included in the papers are two 1951 publications (v. 490, nos 142 & 146) of Hansard, one of which is addressed to A.J.F. MacDonald, London, and unopened.
