Biographical History

Hugo Alpen arrived in Australia in ca. 1863. His grandson, C. Paul Alpen describes him as "an early colonial composer". Hugo married Sarah Brown in 1869 in Albury. Thirteen children were born. Hugo Alpen retired as Superintendent of Music Dept. of Public Instruction, N.S.W. in 1908. He died in 1917. Paul Alpen is an officer of the Prime Minister's Dept. and a great grand-daughter is Mrs Margaret Gillespie (nee Crisp) of Queanbeyan.
