Marie Skodak Crissey (born Marie Skodak) was born in Lorain, Ohio on January 10, 1910. Marie attended the Ohio State University and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in education and Master's degree in Clinical Psychology, both in 1931. Skodak Crissey then went on to the University of Iowa, graduating in 1938 with a PhD in Developmental Psychology where she worked at the Iowa Child Welfare Research Station with Orlo Crissey. Her research at the Child Welfare Research Station centered on adoption, child care, and the development of intelligence. Classmate Orlo Crissey recruited Skodak to join him in his new work at the Flint, Michigan Guidance Center upon her graduation in 1938. She was assistant director until 1942, and then director until 1946.
In 1948, Skodak became the director of Dearborn's Division of Psychological Services, where she worked until retirement in 1969. Skodak Crissey was an American Psychological Association member since 1938, a member of its Council of Representatives from 1966 to 1969, and became a fellow of APA Divisions 7 (Developmental), 12 (Clinical), 16 (School), 17 (Counseling), and 33 (Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities). She was the President of Division 17 and 23, respectively.
Marie Skodak Crissey died on December 5, 2000.
