John Thomas Apperson, Oregon pioneer, was born in Kentucky in 1834 and the family moved to Missouri the following year. He was a steamboat captain on the Willamette in 1859 and enlisted in the Oregon cavalry in 1861. He resumed steam boating after the war until 1872 and then and then settled on a farm near Oregon City. He served on the Oregon Legislature and on the Oregon State College board of regents. He also served two terms as Sheriff of Clackamas County. A building on the campus of Oregon State University is named after him.
