Biographical History
This dissertation, " The Educational Career of Susan Miller Dorsey ", was submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Education at the University of California, Los Angeles, in June 1949. This is a carbon copy with vi, and 310 pages, 14 illustrations, and a bibliography.
This is an account of the educational career of Susan Miller Dorsey (1857-1946), the daughter of James Miller and Hannah Benedict Miller. It begins with her childhood in Penn Yan, New York, and covers her four years at Vassar College and the beginning of her teaching career.
In 1881 Susan Miller married Patrick William Dorsey and together they moved to California. In 1890, her husband abandoned her, taking their son Paul with him, and she resumed her teaching career.
The dissertation discusses SMD's shift to school administration in 1902 and continues with a full account of her active and productive years as vice-principal of Los Angeles High School, as assistant superintendent and then superintendent of the Los Angeles City Schools.
In 1929, after resigning from a third term as superintendent, SMD began 12 years as an active participant on school committees, an advocate of temperance, a speaker, writer and recipient of numerous honors and tributes. She died in 1946 a few days before her 89th birthday.
