Biographical History

The Brooklyn Art Association was founded in 1861 as an organization looking to improve the market for Brooklyn artists and to enhance the culutural life of Brooklyn. The Association was composed of both artists and lay citizens, and through its efforts laid the groundwork for what would later become the Brooklyn Museum. Though influential, the Association began to dissolve in the 1890s.
