Biographical History
Epithet: Director of Public Prosecutions
Archibald Bodkin was born in Hampstead; his ancestry included many lawyers, and he studied law at the Inner Temple and was called to the bar soon thereafter. He built a successful private practice, and was appointed to the Treasury Council in 1892. Meticulous and hard-working, he had a simple and direct litigation style, and handled many notable cases, including the prosecution of spies in the World War I era. He was knighted in 1917, and retired to his garden, but later became a judge.
