Biography
George William Stewart was born at Smith's Flat, near Placerville, April 29, 1857. He lived in El Dorado County until 1869, then at Santa Cruz unitl l1872, when he moved to Tulare County. From 1876 to 1880, he edited the Visalia DELTA. From 1880 to 1883, he did editorial work in Hawaii. He returned to Visalia in 1885 and resumed work at the DELTA, continuing until 1899. In 1887, he joined the Nation al Guard and attained the rank of lieutenant colonel. From 1898 to 1914, he was registrar of the U.S. Land Office at Visalia. From 1914, he worked as a land lawyer in Visalia. Beginning in 1875, he took an active role in conservation of California's forests and was instrumental in creating Sequoia National Park. He organized Mount Whitney Club in 1902. He died in san Francisco, September 6, 1931.
