Biographical History

The Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism began as an informal section in the Department of Medicine with the arrival of Dr. S. Richardson Hill to the Medical College of Alabama in late 1954. Under the leadership of Dr. Tinsley Randolph Harrison, the Department of Medicine officially functioned without formal divisions for medical subspecialties. When Dr. Walter B. Frommeyer became Department chair in 1957, he formally organized divisions based on medical subspecialties, and Dr. Hill became director of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism. During his tenure, he developed a research laboratory, won research grants, and made fellowships available to medical students to study in the Division. In 1962, Hill became dean of the Medical College, and Dr. James A. Pittman succeeded him as Division director. Hill later served as vice president for health affairs at UAB, president of UAB, and a distinguished professor of UAB. The Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism continues to function in the Department of Medicine.
